How the working hours calculator works
Gross shift length is measured in minutes, treating an earlier end time as an overnight finish. The unpaid break is subtracted, and the net figure is multiplied by the number of days entered.
Example
Working hours calculator example
A 09:00 to 17:30 shift is 8 hours 30 minutes gross; removing a 30-minute unpaid break leaves 8 net paid hours, or 40 across a five-day week.
FAQ
Working hours calculator FAQ
Does this calculate pay?
No. It returns hours only. Multiply the net hours by your rate, and use the overtime calculator when a premium rate applies.
Are paid breaks handled?
Leave the unpaid break at zero when breaks are paid, since paid breaks already sit inside the shift length.
Can a shift cross midnight?
Yes. An end time earlier than the start time is treated as finishing the following day.
