If I Had Invested Calculator

See what a hypothetical investment would be worth by entering an amount, a starting share price and an ending share price you supply, plus an optional dividend yield and holding period.

Calculation, not advice. Results are illustrative and depend entirely on the values entered.

Important: This simplified estimate may exclude taxes, fees, timing differences, changing rates and other real-world conditions.

The concept

A hypothetical calculation, not a historical price lookup

This calculator does not fetch real historical prices — you enter the starting and ending share prices yourself, based on data you look up separately (a broker, a financial data site, or your own records). That keeps the calculation entirely local: nothing about which stock or dates you're checking is sent anywhere.

The dividend estimate is intentionally simple: it applies one constant annual yield across the full holding period as simple, non-compounded income, rather than modeling dividend reinvestment, which would compound returns further and requires assumptions this calculator doesn't make for you.

The method

How the calculation works

The investment amount is divided by the starting share price to estimate the number of shares purchased. That share count is multiplied by the ending share price to estimate price-based ending value. If a dividend yield and holding period are entered, a simple estimate of dividend income is added on top.

Ending value = (Amount ÷ Starting price) × Ending price + (Amount × Dividend yield × Years)

The investment amount is converted to a share count at the starting price, then revalued at the ending price. Dividend income is estimated as a simple annual yield applied across the holding period, not reinvested or compounded.

Worked example

A neutral example

For a $1,000 investment at a $50 starting price and a $75 ending price with no dividends assumed, the calculator estimates the ending value of that hypothetical position based on the price change alone.

This example explains the method. It does not recommend a financial action or predict an outcome.

Frequently asked

If I Had Invested Calculator questions

Does this calculator look up real historical stock prices?+

No. It performs no live or historical data lookups — you provide both the starting and ending share prices yourself. This keeps the calculation fully private and client-side, but it also means the result is only as accurate as the prices you enter.

Does the dividend estimate include reinvestment?+

No. It applies a constant annual yield as simple, non-compounded income across the holding period. Reinvesting dividends to buy more shares would generally produce a higher ending value than this simplified estimate, especially over longer periods.

Can I use this to compare 'what if I had invested in X instead of Y'?+

Yes — run the calculator once per scenario with each stock's starting and ending price for the same investment amount and period, then compare the two ending values. Remember this only reflects the specific prices and period you enter, not a general prediction about either investment.
