Frequently Asked Questions
If I Had Invested Calculator: Questions & Answers
Learn how the if I had invested calculator works, why you supply the prices yourself, and how dividend estimates are handled.
What does an 'if I had invested' calculator do?
It estimates what a hypothetical investment would be worth today by converting an investment amount into a share count at a starting price you provide, then revaluing that share count at an ending price you also provide, optionally adding a simple dividend income estimate.
Does it fetch real historical stock prices automatically?
No. You enter both the starting and ending share prices yourself, based on data you look up separately from a broker or financial data site. This keeps every calculation local to your browser rather than requiring a live data request.
Does the result include dividends?
Only if you enter an average annual dividend yield and holding period. The estimate applies that yield as simple, non-compounded income across the period — it does not model dividend reinvestment, which would typically produce a higher result.
Can I use it to compare two different stocks or funds?
Yes. Run the calculator once per option using the same investment amount and holding period with each option's own starting and ending price, then compare the two ending values under matched assumptions.
Can this calculator predict future investment performance?
No. It only computes the outcome of a hypothetical past investment using prices you supply. It has no forecasting capability and should not be used to estimate what a similar investment might return going forward.
