Method

How to calculate flooring to purchase

Waste is applied after measuring the rectangular floor. Complex patterns and room shapes often need a larger allowance.

FORMULAPurchase area = length × width × (1 + waste allowance)

Worked example

Flooring calculator example

A 252 sq ft floor with 10% waste requires 277.2 sq ft of material.

FAQ

Flooring calculator FAQ

How much waste should I allow?

Simple layouts may use 5–10%; diagonal patterns or irregular rooms can require more.

Does this include installation?

No. Unit cost represents material unless you intentionally enter an installed rate.

How should boxes be handled?

Divide required area by coverage per box and round up to a whole box.
