The concept

Reading a currency conversion

A currency conversion applies a quoted exchange rate to an amount. Rates can be presented in either direction, so the currency order matters.

This calculator uses the exact rate entered. It does not retrieve a live rate or account for spreads, commissions or provider fees.

The method

How the calculation works

The starting amount is multiplied by the entered exchange rate. The inverse rate is also shown to make the quote direction easier to inspect.

Converted amount = starting amount × exchange rate

The exchange rate states how many units of the result currency equal one unit of the starting currency.

Worked example

A neutral example

If one unit of the starting currency equals 0.85 units of the result currency, an entered amount of 100 converts mathematically to 85 before fees or spreads.

This example explains the method. It does not recommend a financial action or predict an outcome.
