Bull call spreads and bear put spreads are mirror images — same mechanics, opposite direction, both trading unlimited upside for a lower, defined cost.

Both are debit vertical spreads: you pay upfront, and both maximum gain and maximum loss are fixed the moment you open the trade. The structure is identical; only the direction and the option type change.

Bull call spread: structure

Buy a call at a lower strike, sell a call at a higher strike, same expiration. The premium received from the short call partially offsets the cost of the long call.

Example: Stock at $100. Buy the $100 call for $6, sell the $110 call for $2. Net cost: $4.00.

Bear put spread: structure

Buy a put at a higher strike, sell a put at a lower strike, same expiration. The premium received from the short put partially offsets the cost of the long put.

Example: Same $100 stock. Buy the $100 put for $6, sell the $90 put for $2. Net cost: $4.00 — identical structure, mirrored.

Why use a spread instead of a single option?

A naked long call or long put is cheaper to enter than the corresponding spread, but it carries full exposure to time decay and volatility crush, and its breakeven sits closer to the money — errors in timing cost more. Selling the further-out option collects premium that cuts the net cost roughly in half in the examples above, at the price of capping the maximum gain. For a moderate — not extreme — directional forecast, that trade-off is usually favorable: you rarely need unlimited upside to be profitable, but you do want a lower cost basis and a partial hedge against being early.

Speed of move matters

Both spreads are debit strategies, which generally reward a faster, more decisive move rather than a slow grind — the position is fighting time decay from day one since it was purchased for a net cost. This contrasts with credit spreads (bull put spread, bear call spread), which are structured the same way strike-wise but collect a credit and benefit from time decay and range-bound movement instead.

Implied volatility considerations

Because these spreads combine a long and a short option, net vega exposure is small compared to buying a single option outright. That said, entering ahead of a known volatility-crushing event (like earnings) still costs more in absolute premium when IV is elevated — the debit paid reflects the market's expectation of a larger move, which raises the bar for the trade to reach its breakeven.
